Domaine Garon Description

This story all starts and ends with the Garon family in the Northern Rhone, their families roots date all the way back to 1475! The modern-day story of the Garon’s, however, starts in 1995 when the Garon’s decided to start bottling and selling their fruit which was previously sold to some of the top producers in the region. Domaine Garon owns 5 hectares of vines in Cote Rotie divided into 5 different parcels (Lieu Dits or Named vineyard’s). The vineyards are planted to 100% Syrah. The 5 vineyards are named Rochains, Triotes, Lancement, Combard and Mollard. IF you search any of these vineyards you will see single vineyard expressions of these wines STARTING around $70 a bottle. If you follow great Cote Rotie you will know the wines can sell for $100’s a bottle and they are some of the most sought-after wines coming out of France today.

Domaine Garon is a traditional Cote Rotie producer. The grapes are crushed in whole bunches. The amount of destemming varies, depending on the vintage. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wines are aged in an average of 30% new, French oak barrels and the remainder is aged in 5-year-old barrels for between 18 to 24 months.

70% of this wine is Syrah that is sourced from the vineyards previously mentioned. The duration of time the wine spends in oak is a testament to the quality of the grapes. IF you put poor quality grapes into oak for 18 to 24 months, the fruit would be become dominated by oak.

I have not been fond of terms such as “Baby Brunello” for Rosso di Montalcino or “baby Barolo” for a Langhe Nebbiolo. This wine is without a doubt a “calling card” to Cote Rotie and I have no issue referring to this wine as a “baby Cote Rotie”. IT lacks the depth of flavor and richness of flavor that a Cote Rotie has on palate, at the same time the wine doesn’t cost $70-$400 a bottle. Which is what Garon’s Cote Rotie’s sell for!

Tasting notes: Vivants is 70% Syrah, 20% Grenache and 10% Carignan. The wine is aged in older, neutral barrels which helps to avoid oak influence and better serves to round out textures in the wine. It has lovely, concentrated wild berry flavors, dark chocolate, spice and dry herbs. The acidity is ample for a red wine of this nature giving it freshness and allowing this ripe Syrah to dance on your tongue and pair nicely with good food.
