Silver Ghost Napa Valley Cabernet 2022
This wine has it all. Winemaker sourcing from great vineyards in the best Vintage of the decade thus far at a VERY reasonable price.
As we have repeatedly told you, to find the great wines you must follow the great winemakers. The winemaker in play is Weston Edison. Weston’s mentor is Russell Bevan, one of the most accomplished winemakers currently making wine in Napa today. Russell has received many 100 Pt Wine Advocate scores for the wines he produces under his own label Bevan Cellars. Russell also has taken over the winemaking duties for Mike Smith over at Cater Cellars, another top Napa producer.
The label, Silver Ghost, is a tribute to Westons Great grandfather John Montagu. Montagu was a British lord, a member of parliament, and he was also and engineer for the infamous automobile producer Rolls Royce. Mr. Montagu’s favorite car was a 1909 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, a car he helped pioneer at the turn of the century.
The fruit for Silver Ghost Cabernet is sourced from 3 top appellations in Napa, Calistoga, Yountville, and Rutherford. Each appellation provides 1/3 the fruit for this wine. I personally feel that is what makes this wine great, you get a dab of spice from the Calistoga fruit. Sexy, opulent, approachable fruit up front from the Yountville fruit influence. There is also some nice minerality in the mid palate from the Rutherford fruit. A very complete wine, far from a lot of the Napa fruit bombs that are out there today.
2022 as a vintage is looking quite strong. The interesting part regarding 2022 is Napa experienced a warmer than usual September in 2022. The result is very lush and opulent wines. Decanter wine magazine has already declared 2022 to be a “high quality vintage across the board.”
In checking the reviews on this wine since its inception in 2016, Silver Ghost Cabernet has NEVER scored below 90 pts from any major publication.
Winemaker Notes: Silver Ghost is a full-bodied and richly expressive Cabernet Sauvignon crafted from some of Napa Valley's finest vineyards. Deep in color with a vibrant nose of blueberries, violets and crème de cassis the palate reveals layers of lush red and blue fruits, mocha and dark spice. The luxurious texture and depth continue through the long finish.
Blend: 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot
