Poggio Le Volpi Roma Rosso 2021

Incredible BB-Q red for Spring/Summer

Poggio Le Volpi Description

Poggio Le Volpi has been a leading producer in the Lazio region for a long time and was recently named winery of the year. The domain has been in Merge family for over 100 years. Felice Merge is the oenologist and is idolized in the region of Lazio. Poggio Le Volpi is renowned for producing a wine, Baccarossa, which is made from the rare Nerobuono grape. According to the Italian wine critic Luca Maroni, Bacarossa is the best wine ever made in Lazio. Poggio Le Volpi has an image which is second to none for the quality and elegance of its wines. These wines are the precious jewels which have ennobled the estate's pedigree due to the praise and appreciation heaped upon them.

The Roma Rosso produced by Poggio Le Volpi is A blend of 50% Montepulciano, 30% Syrah, and 20% Cesanese from vineyards that are in the Castelli Romani area, southeast of Rome. Hand harvest, long fermentation of the grapes, soft pressing, and maturation in small and large oak barrels. Many of you are probably familiar with Montepulciano as well as Syrah, what made this wine intriguing to me was the Cesanese. This is a grape native to Lazio and brings bright fruit characters to the wine, along with some earthy undertones. The subsoil is Volcanic soils rich in minerals and organic substances.

This wine is fresh, approachable, and a magnificent wine to serve with food. I would recommend pairing this with any type of grilled meat or spicy dishes. The wine will also pair extremely well with some medium aged cheeses. Doesn’t require much of a breath, just pop, pour and enjoy! Would make an incredible BB-Q red for Spring/Summer.

Tasting Notes: Wonderfully deep, dark ruby red color with a beautiful shine. Very intense and complex nose with lots of ripe black and red fruit like cherries on alcohol, blackberries, wild berries and plum accompanied by spicy impressions of cardamom, nutmeg and black pepper. Notions of undergrowth and a hint of sweet balsamic vinegar emerge in the impressively long and tasty finish.
