Le Ragnaie Troncone 2021

a true "Baby Brunello"

We recently sat down with the importer of these wines to try Le Ragnaie “Troncone” which is La Ragnaies Rosso di Montalcino. As I mentioned in my previous email, I don’t love the term “Baby Brunello”. I have often been let down on so many occasions tasting a Rosso that is presented to me as a “Baby Brunello” it left a bad taste in my mouth, both literally and figuratively speaking. Its wines like the Troncone that gives you an idea or where the term was derived.

Since buying the estate in 2002, Ricardo Campinoti has been acquiring some of the highest elevation vineyards throughout Montalcino. In fact, a number of these vineyards ie Lume Spento, were above the threshold to be produced as Brunello. Le Ragnaie is known for its elegant, terroir-driven wines that stand out in this Tuscan powerhouse category. The parcels Le Ragnaie and Petroso both are centered around the village of Montalcino and have the region’s highest elevation vineyards and oldest winemaking history, respectively. Additionally, the vineyards La Fornace Loreto and La Cava lie in the southern portion of Montalcino within Castelnuovo dell’Abate, adjacent to the iconic Poggio di Sotto.

As the vintages continued to warm, this threshold was raised allowing Le Ragnaie to produce balanced wines in event the hottest vintages. Many feel with global warming in play, the fruit from these vineyards will be allowed to be bottled as “Brunello di Montalcino”. To that end, Troncone, the estates entry level wine, is not your standard baseline Sangiovese. Troncone is made from the estates highest elevation vineyard that remains above the Brunello threshold. Highlighted by its elegance and well-integrated tannins, Troncone highlights the ethos of the estate while offering tremendous value.

Winemaker Notes: Le Ragnaie Troncone offers generosity in concentration of aroma and flavor. Notes of cranberry and cherry abound with laurel leaves and wet stones on the nose. The palate extends with bright red fruit.
