2019 Dominio de Pingus - Flor de Pingus
Not just a top winery in Spain, one of the greatest wineries in all of Europe!
Pingus is produced by the visionary Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck. Peter arrived in Spain in 1993 to manage a new project, Hacienda Monasterio. While planting and developing Monasterio, he began to dream about the old vines he saw dotted around the Ribera del Duero landscape. By the 1995 vintage, Peter had found several ancient vineyards that inspired him to make his own wine. He called it "Pingus," after his childhood nickname.
Winemaker Notes: The wine is clear and bright with a medium ruby color and presence of legs. The nose is clean and developing, showing medium intensity aromas of cedar, vanilla, chocolate, dark plums, dark cherries, licorice and anise. The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium acidity. It has medium supple tannins and a high alcohol. It has a medium body and flavors of cedar, vanilla, dark plums, dark cherries and licorice. The finish is long.
Blackberries, black cherries and hot crushed stones with cement and black licorice. Subtle yet complex aromas. Medium to full body and an exquisite texture, with intense tannins and a long, flavorful finish. The verve and mouth-feel is luxurious and captivating. This is very structured. Try after 2024.
The 2019 Flor de Pingus is marginally riper than the PSI and Pingus from the same vintage but still shows the freshness and finesse the cask sample showed a little over one year ago. The wine has more concentration than the 2018, and it has absorbed the oak quite well. They use maybe 20% new barrels for the élevage here. It has abundant, fine-grained tannins. It's a powerful vintage of flor, reflecting the solar vintage, but still keeping the poise, harvesting early and fermenting at low temperature.
