Domaine Du Mont Verrier Description

The Mont Verrier ‘La Tonne’ Fleurie 2020 was just awarded “Best in Show” at the Decanter World Wine Awards. This is the first-ever Decanter Best in Show Award for Beaujolais. 18,244 wines were in attendance from 54 different countries. Only 50 wines received the accolade “Best in Show.”

Mont Verrier is located between Lyon and Macon, south of the winemaking region of Burgundy, deep in the heart of the “Pierres Dorées” (golden stones) area of the Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages appellations region. You will find the Domaine du Mont Verrier wine estate with its magnificent 17th-century house. The history of the estate is closely associated with that of the Hospices de Villefranche and the nuns from the Sainte Marthe de Beaune “Hospitalier” order. The estate boasts an orchard with over 60 varieties of cherry, apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, and fig trees, most of which are old species, and a vegetable garden with fruit and vegetables of all colors and varieties that will be enjoyed in the summer and fall as part of the “Table d’Hôtes” dinners. All of the farming is done sustainably.

Tasting Notes: It presents a deep ruby red hue. The nose exhales aromas of very ripe red fruit (cherry, raspberry), vanilla, and licorice. The wine is well-balanced on entry to the palate with silky tannins and notes of black fruit (blackcurrants and blackberries), mocha, coffee, and chocolate. The mid-palate is delicate and luscious. The finish is long, mineral, and spicy with notes of blackcurrants, violets, and smoke.

97 Pts Decanter - “Compared with its other nine Beaujolais cru peers, Fleurie is never 'the most' of anything -- except, that is, of charm. The pretty name, too, promises a beguiling scent. This heady as well as head-turning combination is sometimes hard to live up to in practice… but not here. This wine is a dark, opaque black-red, and from the moment you dip your nose into the glass, you'll find all of the flower-fruited lift you expect, allied to flavors which fill the mouth with bright cherry and plum but do so in a way which never calls either charm or scent into question. The wine's weight is all fruit, too, with tissue-soft tannins, and the cherries and plums themselves continue to evoke blossom as much as juicy, spurting flesh on the palate. You might, though, find just a touch of granite stoniness in the finish – enough to detain and thrill on the second (or third) glass. Drink lightly chilled.”
