Domaine De Villane Description

Domaine de Villane Bouzeron is owned by Aubert de Villane. Aubert is heir to the most prominent wine legacies, Domaine Romanee-Conti. Aubert worked for Frederick Wildman and Son, a New York based importer, back in the 1960’s. After leaving that role to return to Burgundy to assume his role of Co-Director of D.R.C., Aubert and his wife Pamela sought land in Burgundy that they could call home. Aubert and Pamela ended up settling in the town of Bouzeron which is situated between Chassagne Montrachet and Santenay. The Domaine Aubert purchased was extremely run down when he purchased it. Aubert and his team spent years studying the terroir and as a result they are pioneers in an area of burgundy that was forgotten about. The town of Bouzeron was home to the monks of the great abbey of Cluny in the 12th century. The legacy of the wines they produced had lasted for centuries. Aubert was determined to recapture the greatness that this land was capable of.

Fast forward 50 years, this Domaine is putting out incredible quality as expected. Given the people behind the wine, I feel the wines are modestly priced.

The grape that is on the upright now in Burgundy is Aligoté. Previously the Aligoté grape was viewed as a “workhorse” grape in a region known for the chardonnay it produces. What many people do not realize is prior to the French Revolution, there was more Aligoté planted in Burgundy than there was Chardonnay. The town of Bouzeron is known for the Aligoté it produces, it is regarded as the best Aligoté in all of Burgundy in fact. Not all Aligoté is created equal. Aligoté “Dore” gives much lower yields and produces wines that are far more expressive on the nose in comparison to Aligoté Vert, which is the lesser of the two clones. For many years the Aligoté grape was overlooked until 1979 when it first earned appellation status of “Bourgone Aligoté de Bouzeron”. The INAO upgraded the appellation to AOC Bouzeron in 1997. That was all due in part to Aubert de Villane’s advocacy for the region.

Winemaker Notes: The nose expresses the essence of ripe fruit, accompanied by refined notes, lightly oaked, intense and fresh thanks to the citrus fruits and with it, this sensation of smelling the "petrichor" (the smell after rain has fallen on stones). On the palate, one perceives the balance that can be found between the roundness of fruit, notes of white flowers and the delicacy of the wine's texture.

92 Pts Decanter - A classic Aligoté that expresses the essence of the grape with profuse aromas of gooseberry, fresh tarragon and flint. The wine offers bright acidity, medium body and impressive length. The yield was down by an average of 75% this year, with only three bunches per vine, not the 10-12 that are customary, but this light fruit load ensured the grapes ripened to perfection.
