Domaine de La Tonnellerie Sancerre 2023

Sancerre is the quintessential white wine for summer. The wines have incredible bright citrus fruits on the nose. They are fresh and alive on palate with great minerality. Great Sancerre must finish with bright acidity.

The issue with Sancerre is the market place is now privy to the wines. With demand rising over the years, finding that great bottle of Sancerre in the mid to low $20 range can be cumbersome, near impossible. Many of the wines we are finding are great, but retail for $30+ a bottle.

Sancerre is the most recognizable appellation for French Sauvignon Blanc in the Loire Valley. The region’s rolling limestone hills and semi-continental climate deliver richly textured Sauvignon Blanc wines with ripe gooseberry aromas, bracing acidity, and flinty-smoke flavors.

Domaine de la Tonnellerie is a 13-hectare estate located in Bue, in the Sancerre appellation, in the Loire Valley, France. Bue is famous for its hills, perfect for growing grapes, with great sun exposure and protection from the elements. The soil there is rich in minerality, composed mainly of clay and chalk, as well as small rocks, which give the wines their acclaimed typicality. Hubert Thirot is the 4th generation running the estate, producing classic white Sancerre from the 9 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc the family owns.

Tasting Notes: Delicate mineral notes of chalk and slate with good citrus and melon in the nose. Fairly rich in the middle with nice snap. Firm acidity braces this wine so that it will stand up to and marry well with fish, shellfish, and goat cheese. The wine is quite floral and high toned in the nose while having a rich, full-bodied middle.
