Casanova di Neri - Brunello di Montalcino 2015
Casanova di Neri was established in 1971 when Giovanni Neri acquired a large estate within Montalcino. In 1991, his son Giacomo took over direction of the estate and winemaking. His 138 acres are divided into four distinct areas: Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, Cetine in Sant'Angelo in Colle, Cerretalto and Fiesole. . The Fiesole is the oldest vineyard due northeast of Montalcino at 862 feet. In 1986, Cerretalto was acquired - a natural amphitheatre near the Asso River at an elevation between 617 and 741 feet. The vineyard’s position to the east of Montalcino and unique terroir justify its own bottling. On the opposite side of Montalcino to the southeast, near Castelnuovo dell'Abate we find the Pietradonice vineyard, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The 61 acre Cetine vineyard, faces south-southeast on a hillside near Sant'Angelo in Colle. Soil, vineyard position, microclimate, choice of clones, grafting and well-organized vineyards all combine to produce exceptional grapes. As the quality of fruit from vineyards has improved, more care and attention have also been given in the winery - from vinification, to the careful selection and use of casks of different sizes, made from different types of oak - always with the maximum respect for tradition. The winery’s Brunello production is divided between three different labels in order to best represent the estate’s unique characteristics - White Label, Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto. Giacomo Neri and consultant Carlo Ferrini are constantly looking for ways to improve their vineyards and winemaking. Their wines are fine expressions of terroir with good structure and soft oak.
Our Brunello di Montalcino is aged in Slavonian oak barrels for about 30 months and in the bottle for a year. It was born in our historic vineyards (in 1873, Sangiovese grapes were already being grown on 12 hectares of "Vigna Nuova di Fiesole"). Its constant high quality is further enhanced by its elegance and finesse.
The Neri family has created a classic expression of Sangiovese from a classic vintage, while remaining faithful to the house style. In a nutshell, these wines always tend to offer dark plum, clove and fig confit over the tiny berry and blue flower aromas you get from the traditionalists. That said, this Brunello needs ample time to open, and I suggest you splash it into the decanter. The Casanova di Neri 2015 Brunello di Montalcino (this is the one with the white label) stays safely within your expectation of the vintage with its variety-driven aromas of wild berry, licorice, blue flower and balsam herb. This wine sees fruit sourced from a vineyard on the northeast side of Montalcino, with Galestro soils ranging from 330 to 480 meters above sea level. Some 95,376 bottles were made. It was bottled in June 2019, and it hit the market in January 2020. You might want more from the aromatics (while you wait for the bouquet to come around), but this wine goes gangbusters in terms of mid-palate and overall texture.
Good deep red. Saline aromas and flavors of red cherry, blueberries, herbs, blood orange and sweet spices. Smooth and long on the bright, very sweet finish. Really quite good.
