2017 Vivier - Sonoma Cost Pinot Noir

Vivier Description

If you prefer Burgundy to California Pinot and Chardonnay. These wines will floor you.

Stephane Vivier is a proven commodity when it comes to making world class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. One of the most sought after producers of Burgundian Varietals in California is the HdV label (Hyde de Villane). This is a joint venture between the Hyde family of Carneros and Aubert de Villane, proprietor of D.R.C. (Domaine Romanee Conti).

Stephane Vivier grew up in Meloisey, Burgundy and started making wine with his elderly neighbor whose family had been making wine for centuries. Stephane went on to obtain degrees in Viticulture and Enology from the University de Bourgogne in Dijon. After working in Switzerland, Sonoma, as well as New Zealand, Stephane developed a greater understanding of both the Old and New World way of making wine. Stephane then went on to become the winemaker for HdV starting in 2002, and he was in that role for 12 vintages.

The 2017 Sonoma Coast Pinot is created from two vineyards in the Petaluma Gap region. The primary source is an old farm ranch with fantastic heritage Burgundian selections; a hidden gem with 30-year-old vines. Also included is Pinot from 15-year-old vines at Gap’s Crown Vineyard, on the western hillside of Sonoma Mountain in the most northern part of the Petaluma Gap. Cool marine breezes clear the hillsides of morning fog. This Pinot Noir thoughtfully blends the best characteristics of each plot of land into a layered, complex whole. 31 Barrels produced (775 Cases)

Tasting Notes: The first thing you notice is an intense perfume rising up to meet your nose. It’s at once earthy and sweet: black cherry, spicy California bay leaves, wet earth, and sticky balsamic. The flavor profile is similarly sophisticated, with an intoxicating top note of candied blood orange and white pepper enlivening an otherwise earth-driven palate. The wine feels smooth as a pebble; tightly knit tannins give it shape without weight, generous and fresh at the same time. So Burgundian.

This Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir walks the tightrope right between the plush aromatics of New-World Pinot and the savory, floral restraint of our favorite Burgundies. The level of quality it delivers at this price is simply astounding!” — Ian Cauble, Master Sommelier (speaking about the 2017 Vivier Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir)
