Vasse Felix Description

Established in 1967 by regional pioneer Dr Tom Cullity, Vasse Felix is Margaret River's founding wine estate. Pristine isolation, ancient lands and twin oceans make Margaret River a wine paradise and one of the world’s greatest environments to grow ultra-premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. These varieties, alongside Shiraz and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends are the primary focus at Vasse Felix. All wines are grown in Vasse Felix’s four Margaret River vineyards then vinified and bottled within the modern winery, situated at the Home Vineyard overlooking the Wilyabrup Brook. The Vasse Felix Cellar Door - also located at the Home Vineyard - is renowned. Featuring a tasting room, wine lounge, art gallery, wine museum and one of Australia's most acclaimed restaurants, visitors are welcomed from all around the world, eager for the ultimate Vasse Felix experience.

There are many things that make Vasse Felix the special place it is: the incredible environment and climate of Margaret River, their secure family ownership, their treasured heritage, and their priceless vineyards. But above all, it's the dedication of the entire team to continue Dr Cullity's original aim for Vasse Felix: "to make the best possible wine".

Winemakers Tasting Notes: A new-age Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon (blended with Malbec), expressing all the regional hallmarks. It is a bright, fruit-forward, earlier-drinking style with attractive savory nuances from Vasse Felix’s quality-led, minimal intervention winemaking approach.

Bright ruby with a purple tinge. On the nose, lovely blood plum and mulberry fragrance, with graphite, some charred nori, roast pan drippings, spicy charcuterie, and a hit of Hickory sauce. A light-to-medium-bodied Cabernet. It has a lovely fresh acidity and fine, crisp and sinewy tannins and a soft, elegant core. Unveils flavors of blood plum and berry

Blend: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5.5% Malbec, 1.5% Petit Verdot

Wine Spectator: 93 Points

Stunning and complex, this stylish, concentrated red offers pure raspberry puree and black cherry flavors that show details of earthy dried porcini mushroom, along with notes of toasted herbs, sandalwood and espresso bean. The long finish reveals firming tannins, but they remain polished and effortless.

James Suckling: 91 Points

Plenty on offer for the price, although paradoxically not the best vintage for a value offering. The tannins, a bit bony and ungenerous. Conversely, I like the savory elements here and feel that things will gel and fill out with time. A slick of blackcurrant, green bean, sage and mint, before the shins and elbows of youth nudge the inner gums. Despite the accessible pricing, give this time.
