Polkura Syrah 2018
I received a visit from my old buddy Anish on Friday. He stopped by to taste me on some inventory he thought was right for our customer base. One of the wines he brought along with him was a label I was very familiar with @ my previous position. It was a Chilean Syrah that we used to stock by the pallet, and it is “one of those wines”. The wine is incredibly reasonably priced for what’s in the bottle. I would mix it into customers' cases, and before I would reach out to them in another 6 weeks, THEY would call ME looking for more of this wine.
The wine is from a great Chilean producer, Polkura. The winery was started back in 1998 by two friends, Sven Bruchfeld and Gunzalo Munoz who had met in college. Although they had gone on their own wine journeys after college the two always dreamed of making wine together. They met at that time near Narbonne, in the south of France. A tasting of a Mediterranean style Syrah in one of the local wineries matched with a tasty lamb and mint sauce, defined this grape variety as the one to be the base for their future wine. In 2002, they found a neglected property in the Marchigüe area - the Western end of the Colchagua Valley that met the soil and climate requirements needed to fulfill their dream.
Ripe, rich and powerful, offering exuberant flavors of blueberry, cassis and Christmas pudding that are matched to Asian spice notes. Dense dark chocolate and dried meat nuances emerge on the creamy finish.
Intense aromas of cracked black pepper, blue fruit and bark. Full body and firm, layered tannins with a juicy, savory palate. Long and really intense, yet always bright. Drink or hold.
The eponymous 2018 Syrah was produced with fruit from different plots in their vineyards in Marchigüe with different altitudes and expositions, fermented and matured separately and then blended to create this bottling. It has varietal character with notes of black olives and smoked bacon, a spicy twist from 12 months in French barriques (20% of them new), and a full-bodied palate with juicy fruit and round tannins. It pretty much showcases the house style of ripe, round and lush wines, rich and tasty and with a soft and tender mouthfeel. 45,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2021.
