Paul Autard Description

The story of the Autard family is the story of all great appellations, in that it is the story of the evolution of expertise -- the sum of first-hand experiences, observations, experiments, inventions, and discoveries, in this case specific to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and the Autard property in particular -- as it is passed down from generation to generation.

The Autard family effort began in Courthézon, with an old farm-turned-vineyard; then in 2005 the enterprise took a giant step forward, with the construction of a new cave that permits vast improvements at every stage in the winemaking cycle.

Jean-Paul, as the heir of this expertise, brings to it his own ideas and intuitions, in order to enhance as well as perpetuate the Autard domaine’s well-deserved prestige. Winemaker Notes: One of Autard's top wines. The Cote Ronde parcel is vinified separately and is aged 16 months in 100% new French oak barrels. It is an intensely concentrated, lush-textured wine with vivid dark fruit, spice, chocolate and oak flavors. Autard only makes this cuvee in top years.

95 Pts Jeb Dunnuck - The same blend as the Juline cuvée (50/50 Grenache and Syrah), the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Côte Ronde sports a dense purple color as well as a beautiful bouquet of red and blue fruits intermixed with plenty of violet, chocolate, peppery herbs, and floral nuances. Fresher and more vibrant than usual (this cuvée is usually more black-fruited and chewy), it's medium to full-bodied and has nicely integrated oak as well as beautiful length on the finish. It's young and unevolved, yet just a beautiful vintage for this cuvée. Give bottles 2-4 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following 15+.

Wine Spectator: 93 Points

Juicy and still youthfully compact, with blackberry, black cherry and raspberry reduction notes coiled up in the core, while dark tobacco, chocolate and black tea accents swirl through. Not shy with the toast but keeps definition and energy through the lengthy finish. Grenache and Syrah. Best from 2023 through 2037. 400 cases made, 80 cases imported.

Wine Advocate: 92 Points

Half Grenache and half Syrah, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvée la Cote Ronde spent 17 months in new oak barrels and was yet to be bottled when I tasted near the end of 2021. Full-bodied, velvety in texture and quite dense on the palate, it delivers notes of plum, spice cake, vanilla and clove.- JC
