Neyen Espiritu de Apalta 2015
The Neyen winery was founded in 2002 on the site of one of Apalta's first wineries, built in 1890. The estate has some of Chile's oldest vineyards, with 120 year old Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon vines - pre-phylloxera cuttings imported from Bordeaux in the late 1800s. The Rojas family purchased this property in 1973 and for decades, the rich fruit supplied Chile's top producers. In 2002, the family created Neyen to showcase this remarkable vineyard and bring out the full potential of the ancient vines at Neyen. in 2012, they partnered with the Huneeus family, proprietors of Quintessa in Napa Valley, to bring this hidden gem to the U.S.
Winemaker Notes: Grapes are harvested at first light, and the fruit carefully double sorted and destemmed. The fruit is then gravity fed into 5000 L tanks, where they are fermented with native yeasts. The wine is then racked off to 225 L French oak barrels, where the wine is aged for 14 months. After this period, the wine is finished in 3000 L foudres for 6 months in order to achieve a perfect integration. 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Carménère.
This is crazy with mushrooms, black truffle, blackberries and hot stone. Old-vine magic. Full body, dense and so polished with integrated and melted tannins. Greatness and respect. A blend of 55% cabernet sauvignon and 45% carmenere. Made from organically grown grapes. 120-year-old cabernet and 70-year-old carmenere. Amazing. Drink or hold. (TOP 100 ANDEAN WINES OF 2018 #22).
