Hamilton Russell Chardonnay Walker Bay 2021
Benchmark South African Producer.
Hamilton Russel is one of the best producers in South Africa. The estate is one of the most southerly positioned properties in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, positioned very close to the sea. The 425-acre property was purchased in 1975 by Tim Hamilton Russell, and it took some time to accomplish. Tim specifically sought out a cooler climate as it allows for longer hangtimes to achieve a richer, more developed berry.
The reigns to the estate were passed over to Tim’s son, Anthony Hamilton Russel in 1991. Anthony did two things that have kept this producer in the forefront of South African wine producers. First, Anthony committed to only source grapes from Hamilton Russell magnificent estate vineyards. Second, Anthony narrowed their range to just Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as the climate is ideal for both varietals.
Today, Anthony and his wife, Olive along with winemaker Emul Ross, and viticulturist Johan Montgomery are completely dedicated to expressing the personality of the Hamilton Russell Vineyards terroir in their wines. Tiny yields and intense worldwide demand keep the elegant, highly individual, estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in very short supply.
Winemaker Notes: Bright, vibrant natural acidity and a marked dry minerality combine with structural length and complexity in this elegant, classically styled wine.
Instantly pleasurable in the glass, the 2021 Chardonnay is fresh with yellow fruit essences that sway with a crystalline purity. Medium-bodied, the wine is complex with bright, energetic acidity that unwinds over the long, lingering, food-friendly finish. This Chardonnay is a masterclass in possessing power and elegance.
Inviting aromas of lemon peel, white peaches, sweet thyme, and lavender. Medium-bodied with a silky texture. Bright, expressive, and a bit stony. Subtle tannins give lovely structure and length to the charming fresh fruit.
Aromas of cedar, butter and linden tea emerge from the glass. This is a Chardonnay from the cool climate Hemel-en-AardeValley. Bright acidity backs a creamy palate of lime, herbs and oak spices.
