Dominio de Pingus Flor de Pingus 2020

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has written of Flor de Pingus: “In the price/quality sweepstakes, this might be Spain’s finest wine.

Dominio de Pingus Description

Peter Sisseck is one of the greatest winemakers to grace Spain, his top wine under the Pingus label, Domino del Pingus is now selling well over $1000 a bottle, and it's one of the most sought-after wines coming out of Spain. Peter came to Spain back in 1993 to produce the wines for Hacienda Monasterio. While putting his blood, sweat, and tears into setting up Monasterio, Peter became enamored with all the extremely old vines of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) he would come across in Ribera. In 1995, Peter found vineyards containing ancient vines of Tinto Fino and decided to purchase the vineyard. He named the Estate “Pingus” after his childhood nickname, and the rest is history.

Peter has sought out the best independent vineyard growers in Ribera and is incentivizing them to improve viticultural practices and shun chemicals, lower yields, and practice biodynamics by paying them increasingly for the fruit as they improve. The result is a "give back" to the region wine that also expresses the "soul" of Ribera.

James Suckling: 94 Points

Aromas of perfumes and violets with blueberries follow through to a medium body with very fine tannins that run the length of the wine and show muscle and length. Linear and toned. Give this time to open and show you more. Try after 2026.

Wine Advocate: 94 Points

There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there'll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It's harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins.
