Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne 2016

Served @ DBFW's "2016 Vintage" Tasting

Barolo Lecinquevigne is a blend of Nebbiolo from five vineyards located in the areas most adept for the cultivation of this varietal. The grapes used for this prestigious blend are grown in the calcareous-clay soils of Barolo, Verduno, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Novello. The wine has a very distinct look, and it’s difficult to guess its age. The Nebbiolo vines range in age from 30 to 50 years old. The resulting wine has a ruby-red color with orange highlights and leaves behind an intense fragrance of rose, leather, tobacco, and subtle hints of violet and tar. The taste is broad and encompassing, leaving a compelling sensation of softness in the mouth, with a long and persistent finish. This Barolo can be enjoyed right away, but also has the capacity to age very well. This wine is best served at 61°F -63°F. Barolo Lecinquevigne, while not conceived as a single vineyard cru, is still considered a very important wine in Damilano’s portfolio.

Damilano Description

Damilano Wine Company is one of the oldest wineries in Barolo with historic traditions. The Damilano family business dates back to 1890 when Giuseppe Borgogno, the great grandfather of the winery’s current owners, began to vinify his own estate wines. The town of Barolo resides in the generous and beautiful Langhe region, and its name was taken on by the “king of wines”. It is with great passion that Giacomo Damilano, the founder’s son-in-law, developed with his children a love for the vineyards, selecting and maintaining them with great care in order to improve the quality of the wines. Over time, the winery’s production was transformed into a jewel that was passed down with pride in 1997 to Giacomo’s grandchildren, who continue to manage the winery today. Paolo, Mario and Guido Damilano, the fourth generation, have brought new vigor to the family business, strengthening and developing the fruit which this extraordinary land has to offer. Always looking forward, they continually seek innovations to further refine Damilano’s production.

Winemaker Notes: Ruby red in color with orange reflections. An intense bouquet, with tertiary notes of rose, leather, tobacco and emerging notes of violet and tar. The palate is ample and embracing, with prevailing impressions of a soft, persistent long finish.

Lecinquevigne is perfect for braised meat , game, mushrooms and aged cheeses.

James Suckling: 94 Points

This is really creamy and delicious with chocolate, hazelnut, dried-berry and walnut character. Round and chewy with polished tannins, it turns ripe and beautiful. Such pure fruit.

Wine Advocate: 93 Points

This is a blend of the five vineyard sites farmed by Damilano, and if you look at the single-vineyard wines in this portfolio, you see Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi and Raviole. The 2016 Barolo Lecinquevigne offers a 360-degree view of Barolo with pretty primary fruit backed by elegant tannins and mid-weight fruit fiber. The wine is a happy sum of its various parts, and as expected, you can't really make out the characteristics of any one unique growing site. That's exactly the philosophy behind a blended wine like Lecinquevigne. The wine ages in large oak casks for 24 months

Wine Enthusiast: 92 Points

Pressed rose, woodland-berry and menthol aromas take center stage. It's full bodied and tense, offering dried cherry, cranberry and licorice framed in tight fine-grained tannins that leave a drying close.
