Chateau Olivier Grand Cru Classe 2010

Aged out and drinking to perfection!

Chateau Olivier Description

What makes a vintage “great” is the ability to age. 2010 for the left bank in Bordeaux has been argued by many to be one of the very best. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate awarded the 2010 Vintage in the Graves a massive 99 pts (As a vintage). I recall the 2010 wines when they were young. I found the wines to be extremely concentrated and aromatic, however, extremely tight on the back end. The wines needed time to develop without question, and now they have had it!

Chateau Olivier is a classified growth for both red and white wine in the Grave. If you are not familiar with the Grave, this is where Haut Brion hails from. The grave is the only appellation in Bordeaux that derives its name from the subsoil, which is comprised mainly of gravel. This gravel imparts minerality to the wines, which gives the wines incredible balance. Chateau Olivier is a 55-hectare estate that is owned by the Bethmann family and is one of only 6 Grave producers that has achieved Grand Cru Classe status for both their red and white wines. The 2010 Bottling of their rouge is said to be one of the best wines ever from this estate!

Winemaker’s Notes: This wine very elegant blackish color boasts all the characteristics of a great vintage. The bouquet is appealing. On the palate the explosion of strawberry, blackberry and raspberry flavors combines with light, pleasantly silky tannins. The overall impression is smooth and fruity. The finesse of the cabernets and the roundness of the merlots once again turn out to be perfectly complementary. This is a great, racy wine, a perfect expression of its deep-gravel terroir and a wine that offers a new dimension.

Blend: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot

James Suckling: 95 Points

Pure and beautiful aromas of blueberries and dark chocolate that follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and a silky finish. Very fine indeed. Wonderful length to this. Best wine in years from here.
