Castelnau de Suduiraut - Sauternes 2016
Classified as a First Growth in 1855, the beautiful estate of Suduiraut is located just down the road from Yquem and is owned by the AXA Company. Planted to 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, it is undeniably one of the great estates of Sauternes. 'At its best, Suduiraut turns out very rich, luscious wines that in blind tastings can be confused with Yquem. In great vintages, the wine needs a decade to be at its best, but will keep easily for 30 years. Richly colored, quite perfumed and decadently rich, Suduiraut can even be massive in the top years.' Robert Parker
Castelnau de Suduiraut is the second wine of Suduiraut and possesses a more youthful, fresher style made from younger vines. A blend of 94% Semillon and 6% Sauvignon Blanc, this has aromas of spices, fruity jams and wood with a generous, full-bodied palate with notes of creme de peche, dried apricot and licorice.
"Castelnau de Suduiraut is a wine with a distinctive character for which the groundwork is prepared far in advance, even down to the choice of specific plots to give it its own unique identity. Made from portions of the harvest that are expressive earlier than those used for Château Suduiraut, this wine with aromas of candied yellow fruit, quince, frangipani, mild spices and a hint of minerality is more approachable when young in terms of tasting than its elder."
A perfect introduction to Sauternes, this has very nice dried-papaya and mango character, creamy richness and animating acidity that lifts the long finish beautifully. Spot on balance. The second wine of Suduiraut.
